| CONCEPT | LITTLE LIBERTIES Create little liberties within extensive restrictions. The urban arrangement and building plots were prescribed. Their geometry had to be followed precisely, leaving no latitude to shift or alter the building volumes. A derelict industrial building had been demolished except for its ground-floor structure. This retained level and its structural grid had to become the base for the new housing development. The inherited industrial grid was fundamentally unsuitable for conventional housing and became a central architectural constraint. Within these extensive restrictions, the project creates little liberties: shared spaces and play areas between the prescribed volumes, and individual residential quality within them. The title is deliberately ambiguous. “Little” describes the modest scale of each liberty while also suggesting scarcity: there may be too few liberties, or less freedom than the situation requires. “Liberties” refers both to genuine spatial freedoms and to the careful act of taking small liberties within strict rules… |
